Role – Director, Editorial Strategy & Digital Production

HBO’s Digital Social Media (DSM) team is seeking an inspiring leader who balances a love of content strategy and big-picture thinking with the day-to-day responsibility of implementing and publishing those content initiatives to HBO’s key digital platforms:, HBO GO and HBO NOW. This role is responsible for both defining and implementing the HBO brand voice across those digital platforms as well as being the creative lead for brand-led communications across social media, email, push and other digital-first platforms.

This hybrid role will lead a team of content managers and producers who concept, develop and produce the brand content across platforms. This Director is a key partner to both the DSM Brand Marketing and the Acquisition & Retention teams, working closely with those teams to map user journeys across the brand ecosystem and inform the editorial strategy within those journeys.

A fluent understanding of digital marketing content is a critical part of success in this role - as is a fluent understanding of the technology powering today’s most engaging digital experiences.

A key leadership position within HBO’s Digital Social Media team, this role reports to the Vice President of Digital Production.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Oversee all content initiatives regardless of format or channel in support of DSM Brand Marketing efforts, all of which ladder up to HBO’s brand goals and business metrics.

  • Responsible for the development and execution of the HBO brand tone of voice in digital.

  • Oversee editorial strategy as well as the execution of daily content across, HBO GO and HBO NOW including curation efforts such as Collections & Staff Picks.

  • Advise on tone of voice across all brand channels, inclusive of social brand platforms, email marketing, push and in-app messaging.

  • Supervise the writing of content, including articles, headlines and varied marketing copy across digital platforms.

  • Oversee a team of freelance writers who can contribute to the overall editorial output across channels.

  • Develop new editorial and production workflows to create a more seamless tone of voice across digital platforms and routinely evaluate publishing guidelines.

  • Analyze data to improve upon content experiences and editorial strategy.

  • Partner with stakeholders across Consumer Marketing, HBO Brand, CSR, Media Relations, HBO’s AOR and others to develop and integrate original creative across all digital platforms.

  • Fully execute on cross platform brand initiatives, keeping initiatives within scope and budget

  • Be a key driver of change within the team.

  • Identify consumer-facing content needs and product enhancements across platforms and partner with product stakeholders to execute those enhancements.

  • Identify industry insights and trends to define and refine channel approach.

  • Take a lead role in one-on-one management of direct reports, including career development and talent retention efforts.

  • Lead freelance contract negotiations and vendor assessments on an as-needed basis.

  • Assist the VP of Digital Production in department-wide resource assignments and planning (including staffing and budget).


  • Experienced at generating content strategy and publishing high-quality marketing activations with at least 8 years of relevant (i.e. media rich) interactive experiences. Multi-platform output is a must.

  • Demonstration of strong editorial judgment, a high standard of journalistic ethics and a forward-thinking attitude.

  • Self-directed, proactive, organized, efficient, detail-oriented, unassailable focus on the basics, tenacious (persistent about bringing open items/projects to closure), accountable, enthusiastic, able to lead, motivate and drive.

  • Ability to balance multiple, competing directions, identify and delegate tasks effectively and manage multiple projects successfully.

  • Strong communication (written, verbal, presentation) and influence-management skills essential; can collaborate effectively and efficiently.

  • Process minded and adept at operational effectiveness and problem solving.

  • Passionate about television, media and cross platform storytelling.

  • Proven ability to meet deadlines and to deliver to budget.
